Hi everyone,

I ve seen a lot of good work here about cars, but i really cant get the right shader for a car, i tried using mirror shader, but if any one can tell me a real tip, or settings, to get the most realistic effect it would be helpful. thanks...

Hi,

The basic car paint can be achieved by fresnel water shader with colour bitmap. (left picture)

Setting up the metallic finish is a bit more complicated. You have to use a car model with body built with two layers as it's not possible to apply multi layer materials in Artlantis. (right picture)

Base layer:
- Bespoke shader with noise map on reflection - metallic finish.

Top layer.
- Fresnel water.

Cheers

I agree that the fresnel water shader is a good one to use for car paint.
But Artlantis cán use several materials on top of eachother to create sophisticated materials.
My image was not done with the two layers as in previous post but with only one.

I advice to read The Artlantis Attitude

Dwight dedicated a complete chapter in his book to explain how to create complicated material surfaces on just one plane.

Hi Sjaak,

I own The Artlantis Attidue as well, it is a great book.
You are right, it is possible to achieve many sophisticated materials with one layer. However, it is IMPOSSIBLE TO CREATE METALLIC PAINT USING ONE LAYER ONLY because of it's complexity, which Dwight also said in his book.

Cheers,

btw. The left image of mine has been also created using one layer only :)

Asree, I will do providing that I find the file.
The setting is really simple though. What you need to do is to set up the water transparency to black, make it flat and adjust the fresnel reflection. You will get a car paint in every colour as long as it is black :))
If you would like to add a colour you need to apply a bitmap and play with ambient colour and transparency.

Cheers,

Ronald,

I would advise you to get the Book from the Author not from retailer as I did, to be 100% sure where the money goes.
You can place the order sending a email to Dwight: dwight_atkinson@telus.net.

You will then receive briliant bonus materials listed below.

— several .atl models with associated catalog items gathered together in folders.
— postcards of book examples with associated images as textures.
— a model used for the page 46 alignment exercise. Have fun.
— two model files for the sequence example — start and end of process
— a Quicktime movie demonstrating sequencing techniques, based in the sequence models.

Cheers

Let me repeat that you really get the best deal following that link.

Because....

You get the brilliant bonus material as describe above AND...

Dwight personally adds one of his scenes, the Mondeo scene AND....
The retailer adds a scene to the book with extra objects.

Read about it HERE

I have found the file.

To me is rather helping you make money :)
This thread is about the car paint not about great deals. Isn't it ?
Honestly, I was considering to get the book from you but eventually got it from Dwain. IMHO supporting Author is priceless and same or even better quality "free gifts" are availble from 3d warehouse for free.

Hi,
How do you do that ? Is it possible to update an existing model to make the car body be in two layers ?

I tried to duplicate the body in Artlantis, make an object with it and shrink it, export the new model in .obj file but they are some problem, the "two body parts" cross each other so they are artefacts on the render.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Bonjour,

sorry, it is not true.
First, You can aplly texture over shader only. It dosent mean material over material.
The only aspect witch could be mix is colour. There is not possible to mix light behaviour of texture and material. There is not possible to got different shining and reflecting parameter for both of them. There is not possible to achieve real multilayered survace, laquered metal or plastic for example.

Pozdrawiam serdecznie! Karol Chada/Wrocław
