hi guys,
i am wondering: do you use more shaders or textures to finalize the view you want to render? what helps the render- time more, make it faster or slower? i must admit i am not very proud of the shader- library (the quality of the shaders)i have collect in all these years although it is more than 1,8GB big. should i start using more textures and forget the shaders? opinions, thoughts, advices... thanks all

Depends on what you like best in your own workflow.
Textures can give you a lot of freedom. The biggest disadvantage of textures is that you need to do all settings again when you use it in another job. That is no problem when you use a particular texture just once in a single job. When you use a texture reularly then it is wise to make a shader out of it. In a shader you are able to adjust more settings of the texure and use those settings in every job without having to do it over again in every job. Next to that you have the possibilty to have more control over reflection, shininess, bump and transparency. The biggest advantage is being able to add a normal map to the shader which adds a lot of reality to the texture.
From my own experience I know that making a really good shader can take some time. The quality of the shader depends heavily on the quality of the maps you create. Luckily enough some good affordable shaders are offered in the market.
thanks for the quick answer sjaak. the shaders i have are all from artlantis media but i am not really satisfied with them. the solution to create new ones is nice but needs lots of time like you said. where do you suggest to look after shaders? a nice site with textures i found is http://www.filterforge.com/
