Well .. like every one else, trying V3 with a V2 file, ok we all understand by now that we had to say goodbye to the old super fast rendering ( I didn't have the chance yet to try it with LARGE project...I think there will be a BIG difference in time).
However I like the options and controls of the advanced radiosity mode( I like the fact that we can control - direct faces and non direct , and the color bleeding thing ! wow ! I like that ).

any how here are the pics

in first i liked the custom settings but really u get lost!
And as i see it, "default - high" gets pretty close to custom (all higher that "default high") but u lose a lot of time...

Some things look kinda odd when in high mode...Check the picture. The e7tra shadows below the bench look nice in the second picture but in the first they r meaningless..

BIG differences in rendering speed?

I think it's a little bit exagerated don't you think?

If you compare default settings like the high level of radiosity, for your image we obtain approximatively 8min and in high DEFAULT level in v3 we obtain 11min...

3 min for a BIG difference of quality I personnaly think that this is not a realy enormous problem.

Of course if you use expert settings and you push higher, the difference in rendering time will be more important.

So I'm very interested by your opinion, do you really think that the quality doesn't justify a little increase of rendering time?

Of course we continue to work on performances, so we try always to optimize Artlantis don't worry about that.

Best regards,

Stephane Desmulie / ABVENT.

You miss understood me...(i hope)

i was talking "high default settings in ART3" compared to "high custom settings also in art3"

there is a difference in time BUT not so much in quality...

Hi Stephane,

Please re-read what I said

( I didn't have the chance yet to try it with LARGE project...I think there will be a BIG difference in time).

So I wasn't talking about the few minutes in this example, (however yes I find 3 Min out of 8 is BIG difference) and actually as I said that I expect that to get bigger ratio on large projects (not sure though..hope I am wrong).

And answering your question :
do you really think that the quality doesn't justify a little increase of rendering time?

Quality Does justify that in general ,but what amount of quality and what amount of rendering time? actually it is too early for me to say if it does or not with ATL3 . for example when Artlantis Studio and R were released, It was really clear that for that huge jump any one would be happy for extra time of rendering ( can't even remember if there was an extra time at all- because it is fast ! ).

But to be honest its not that easy to detect the advantages of the new rendering engine, please don't get me wrong .. I can tell in the above example that the Grass object near the camera looks really better. but the building ? really I can't see a difference (yes in small details, not in the main thing).

So far I love the options where I can control the color bleeding and bouncing and so, and I really think it is powerful.

Anyhow I still think it is a nice version, and I hope that I am wrong about my expectations on large projects !

Thank you abvent !

Stam don't worry, I understood what you said. ;o)

Tayssir ok I think I was a little tired yesterday... ^^
Radiosity in v3 is more precise, and on detailled scenes you will see a big difference.

Continue to test it, and tell on the forum if you find problems or if you have wishes for the future of Artlantis, because we keep all that our users said in mind. ;o)

Best regards,

Stephane Desmulie / ABVENT.

In the tests I have done thus far, I have found a really big difference in rendering time (to qualify this, I am still learning all the different settings, so I hope to reduce my render times). I'm not criticising the new version, it has some fantastic improvements and the render quality and realism is really good, so I think Abvent have done well.

What's important though is that Artlantis markets itself as "the fastest stand-alone rendering application …… ideal for quickly and easily creating high resolution 3D renderings". If all of this still holds true, then that is great, but there has definitely been a sacrifice of time in favour of quality.

In my opinion this is the best rendering of all of them, and the two under it... The ceiling looks best, the SHARPNESS in the new version isn't necessary for an exterior scenery because we end up blurring that out in photoshop anyways, adding atmosphere, pollution, or fog... Depth of field is also something we all use to make the scene more "believable".

I don't see $650 worth of "betterness" to this new Artlantis 3 version... I'm gonna sit patient for a year or so.... Nice Test Tayssir thanks for testing and sharing...
