I would export each component to Artlantis then save each component as a 'aof' object file that way you can change just the component and not the whole model.
Thanks, I'll try that. It seems like a possible workaround, but I would prefer a objects by layer :-)
If I do as you say, and lets say I have a material called 'glass' in every 'aof' file, I will then have as many glass materials as aof files, right ?
I seems a bit odd to me, that we have to save a atl file in a other format (aof) before it can be used in atl file. Don't get me wrong, I really like Artlantis, but I think there are some functions that could be more simple...

You asked a solution for something that bothers you. Joseph offered you a good workaround. He wasn't telling you that you HAVE to save everything as AOF. ArtLantis is the most simple to handle and to learn Renderengine. What do you want? You want to work with a renderengine and still want it to function like a modeler. That is what I read between the lines of all your questions. AOF files are the 'symbols' that you can have in a modeler.
I think that you need to abandon the CADmodeler way of thinking when you want to render your work. These are separate things.
The ability to turn on and off objects (by layer or material), or / and collect / merge materials, does not make Artlantis a modelprogram does it ?
Again, don't get me wrong, I really like Artlantis, simple to use, and it creates nice results very fast. I'm just searching for a better workflow, if possible..... you found yours, I figure...
