I had the same problem, with a model with a lot of materials, but not one with minimal materiasls. For the model with a lot of materials I had to delete the materials in the model, and then I could import the model, but with none of the materials. Not a great solution. Maybe there is a limit to the number of materials you can have.

Export fails for large and nested files.
Not ready for prime time yet.
Just use 3ds for now

I used the "export to 3DS-import to Artlantis" but I lose all of my textures and their placement...

I'm sure if the SU exporter was functioning we wouldn't have this problem, but as for now, being stuck with the convert to 3DS option, doesn't work either for maintaining the textures.

HELP!

Hi Guys

This new download still has not solved my issue with exporting to artlantisR from sketchup. I still am only able to export all the textures and not the model.
I uninstalled the previous exporters before installing this new one but i still have no luck.

I have an original copy of both sketchup & artlantis.
I have been unable to open any sketchup model in Artlantis.
I was unable to export the su5 file to an artlantis, but once I managed that I was confronted with the inability to open the file.
Can Artlantis offer a clear guide to the process.
I am a Mac user, and have definitely downloaded the appropriate plugiins, but despite my efforts I have yet managed to use the artlantis programme for its intended purpose. It seems that the very existence of this forum subject paints a clear picture as to what the problem.
Will Artlantis comment with clear instructions.
I have used the programme in conjubnction with vectorworks with great sucess, but with sketchup I have encountered nothing but trouble. Is the fact that sketchup is 'sketchy' a reason for this?
Can you offer me examples of 3d models created in sketchup and rendered in artlantis?

Sincerely
Rory Martin

Rory,

Quite many people are able to use SketchUp and ArtLantis together. You will find many examples in the WIP section, in the Gallery, and the Gallery forum of the SketchUp website.

I have used two ways of exporting my model to ATL - either as a 3DS file, and now, as the export plugin seems to work fairly well, as an ATL file.

As I have a PC, I cannot give you the installation instructions to install the ATL plugin to work with SU on a MAC, but the result should be the ATL file format to appear as an option in the File>Export>3D Model dialog box. ArtLantis cannot open SU files straight.

Have you tried the 3DS file option?

I have installed the exporter for Sketch Up also and still have no option for ATL files. I am using the trial version of artlantis so I would like to know whether or not this thing is worth buying. But I cant tell that if I cant use it appropriately.

Doing 3ds files and having to reasign materials is NOT a viable option.

Any kind of link I should read or tutorial to make sure I have everything set right?

Hi all,
I had the same problem at the beginning,I couldnt export from sketchup into a .atl file. but once you open and install your plug in, (found in your program file normally, or wherever you saved it,) restart your computer, it worked for me...I could then find the option to export it as a .atl. as a 3D model obviously
But I have now a problem opening it into artlantis, it seems as it takes hours to open, I waited 8 hours once...but nothing.
My file is 20mb, I dont know if its too big or what?
Any suggestions would be welcome
thanks everybody...& good luck

The solutionn in this troble for me is:
1) PURGE all unused materials in Sketchup model
2) Be sure that "Layer0", the original layer on new created models, is exists i your model and the most important is "VISIBLE".

and this works fine to export 3DS and dwg files also

Answer to Melyne:

I had the same problem, the reason for it is you probably have a PC with 512 MB of Ram, but Artlantis requires 1 gb of ram.

Hope this helps.

P.S. I am also having constant problems with sketchup exports and artlantis imports.

I'm using SketchUp and Artlantis on a Mac. I export the model from SU using the export plugin and that works fine. I'm losing some detail in the export of the model but that's probably my fault.

In SU I do select all and explode, I'm giving everything another colour. But still I loose deatil. Maybe I should experiment with more materials or am I missing something?

Cheers

Anthonie

I am using SketchUp 5.0.232 on WinXP and ArtlantisR 1.1fc12 on OSX 10.3.9. I have downloaded and installed the 'Export Plug-in from SketchUp 5 to Artlantis R and Studio' dated 06.09.2006.

I first started by doing a small test model in SK that I exported to ATL and brought into AR. I did this several times, successfully every time, trying out different settings and model configurations to see what the plugin did and did not do. Every time I ended up with an ATL file that would open fine in AR.

Then I started working on a real model for one of our projects. I got everything in the model set correctly and then exported to ATL using the default (nothing checked in Options) settings. The cursor hourglassed for several seconds and then went back to normal. When I looked in the folder I exported to, there was nothing! I tried this several times with different settings - still no go. I did a search on the drive in case the file ended up somewhere else - nothing. I restarted several times and tried again - still nothing.

Does anyone have any ideas on why this is occuring? Obviously, the file is suspect, but why this result? Any past experience that might identify some clues or something to look for? Any help appreciated.

Ajpid,

I am not sure if this is helpful, but I remember having the same kind of trouble, and checking that the file and folder names in the path you are exporting to had no spaces or "foreign" (not to me) characters helped. That may also be the reason why some people can export to the desktop but not in a folder...

Just guessing
