you have artlantis studio / renderer 2.0 right?
the image is poor, grainy and black&white because it is not finished. in the previous versions of artlantis (1.2.x) the final image was visible as soon as the rendering started. here it goes in several phases (the first one being the one you described). the other difference is that in version 2.0 the render saves itself in any phase (previously it was a temporary .tga until the rendering is over).
