I have made a 12 second animation on a Mac Pro 8 core with 16 GB ram. The .mov file size is 918 MB. Playing back in Quicktime, the duration needle moves across the bottom continuously, however the rendering will freeze after a few seconds. If I pause and restart, then the animation will resume again at the correct point, but will eventually freeze again. Any thoughts or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest that you export your file from Quicktime Pro (if you have it) and add some compression like H264 this will help it to play more smoothly. Also try playing using VLC instead of Quicktime player.
