I personaly prefer objects....billboards are lighter though...but as far as I know you have to re-add them in every different view. I don't know if there is a comand that tells billboards to always face the camera..
For right perspectives I believe objects are better...

I prefer objects, though the extra polygons will slow the rendering process. Billboards can be very useful, but you have to be very careful with setting the brightness and contrast settings to match the scene lighting. I avoid billboards completely for animations.

Agreed! I just spent a few weeks on a 3min animation. Static billboard people really detract from the ambience. Then again so does anything static! It looked funny seeing cars drive in the parking lot but the trees do not sway in the wind and the fountains do not spill water. Not to mention all those people just stand there!
