Is there anybody who could explain to me how it is possible to make objects from the billboard like people or trees transparent? I would be very grateful if somebody could give a step-by-step explanation!

thank you for your answer, but I want to make 2d objects like trees or people from the billboard transparent, or giving them a color by using the basic shader. Still can't find out how this is possible...

render two images: one with people, another one without people.
Then put in Photoshop in the same archive.
Change the opacity like you want (next to layers window).

If i want to make the objects transparent in artlantis, I ususally use only sketchup objects (2d ones, which have been colored with a single materials. then it's just a question of increasing transparency in artlantis of the particular material.
Only catch is they don't orient to the camera.
Or make a new billboard. there are some softwares available or you can also do it by editing the current ones. (google it.)
There's a longer route if you want the specific billboards from artlantis. I open the tga files that come with the billboard files (make a copy first) and use that as a texture in sketchup on a flat vertical rectangle, then save as a component and pose it in te camera angle i want to use in artlantis or export all the people/trees etc as separate artlantis files and make each an aof and then load in the original file. The second method is very painful, but i've used it, and it works.
put in your scene a vertical plan (take it in Artlantis object Archive)plan must have height just like a person
to this vertical plan put just like a texture a people image (you may use some png format that may find in BB folder that you may find in ARCHIRADAR DOUNLOAD page
