I´m about to buy a new Mac.
What config of the Mac Pro is giving Artlatis 3 the best prefomance? Should I go for "clock" or cores? Cant afford both. Does Artlantis draw any benefits of the 12 cores?
Is it worth the extra money to buy Two 2,66 GHz 6-Core (12-Core) Intel Xeon "Westmere" insted of One 3,33 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon "Westmere" in prefomance.

You should go for both :)
Between two same clock speed processors Artlantis will favor the one with more cores. In general terms, the number of cores will also influence the performance and work-flow in case you use multiple applications such as Artlantis, modeler application, Photoshop, or else. Check some hardware tests to see the difference in performance of processors with different speed.

So currently the fast quad wins for just rendering ? The 6 core does give you some headroom for extra apps. Szabo how does this work with hyperthreading ? Because an 8 core has 16 virtual cores would artlantis use all 16. A specced out imac suddenly looks perfect for Art !

Never buy a machine based on current software.I am sure Artlantis will be opened up to more cores at some point. In the mean time you can run batch render alongside studio with no performance loss. Normally the golden rule is get as much as you can afford. Also never gat the ram or HDD from apple. The fast 6 core is starting to look a really good option.
On a side note Szabo this alpha is getting very old will we see a beta ? Or will it be rolled into artlantis 4 ? Give us some idea please !

Looks like you made the right choice. In activity monitor what do you see from Artlanis 800% on 4 cores ? You whooped the previous 8 core something to learn here. Idiko surely the renders should be identical only the time that differs ?

There is a huge gain in rendering time first of all, and regarding the quality, Simon, you put the right question! :) If the settings are the same, the quality also should be the same, and this is the opinion of our expert too. The applied effects could "cheat" our eye, so what about rendering the same scene without any effects?
