hello jacek! Thanks for the comments.
The grass is very simple, it's done in photoshop with a normal texture of grass used as pattern (to repeating). I prefer this method instead of calculating a lot of polygons in render phase.
look at this link -> http://forum.asgvis.com/index.php?Itemid=90&topic=2320.#msg11812
you can do with that image a pattern, or simple repeating with 3 or 4 layers in background

or you can see as well this one -> http://forum.asgvis.com/index.php?topic=4156.0
they are both good methods to get a good grass without doing everything in 3D and increase render times
good work ;)

Les, tell me one thing... do you choose the photoshop option before hit render? or do you render in JPEG? You have to choose Photoshop format for the image, and then open in Photoshop and see what happen. ;) Try to do that first...

Hi Marco,
I also read all your posts and the links about making grass in PS but the problem I had was the fact that you can render in ATL in PS format and afterwards change the background but shadows which has been in this background will also be gone after deleting this background. Any Advice how to avoid this. In the one tutorial which was under one of the links the big advantage was that the shadows of objects will stay after changing the background to the PS grass.
Cheers
Patrick

yes, it's true... you will loose the shadows from artlantis, but there's no problem, create a new layer in photoshop and make a selection from the old shadows layer, paint the selection black, give't a transperacy 60% and apply a gaussion blur on it.
If you render the final image in photoshop format, when you open'it in photoshop you will see that you will have 4 layers, one is the most important, the one that has material ID by colours.
I will try to make a tutorial for you all

Hi Marco,
Sweeeeet grass! Is there any chance you could do a tutorial of the way you make the rotating/repeating grass in photoshop? I suck at photoshop and am contemplating throwing my pc out the window.

Heya Asree,
I think I might know how to do this, though im not sure I can explain it. Here goes anyway:
First create a render but instead of the grass texture in artlantis you just use a white basic shader and render as a photoshop document
In photoshop go to the materials layer and use colour select to select all of the areas to be grass. Then switch to the model layer (this layer has all the shadows) do a layer via copy.
This should leave you with a black and white image of the shadows which you can then switch to multiply in the blending mode and overlay on the grass image to give the correct shadows.
Hope this is clear :S if not let me know and I can try again.
