Original size

We need to render large elevations.
Problem #1
The elevation line is more like a section in that it cuts through the model. Unfortunate effect is that billboards at the outside edges of the elevation rotate to face inward and so get distorted.
Possible solution?
I cropped the model to the extents I wanted to render, and moved the elevation line well back from the cut so that the billboards rotated more perpendicular to the elevation line. This worked but generated problem #2
Problem #2
I the elevation line is moved back from cropped area, any objects in between the two generate errors in the final product - please refer attached image. Is there a setting I am missing, or is this a problem in Artlantis?

One advice Robert. What are you trying to show with that render? the house or the trees? The trees are getting all my attention and i just cant focus on the design, and that is bad, so try to make the objects more transparent and let the client appreciate the design.

What version of the software are toy working with?

Nico.

Please note:
1. This is a small part of render, and the corruption is adding to the confusion.
2. The corruption appears to be caused by objects that are cropped out but lie between the viewer and the cropped area. If I put the elevation line almost contingent to the cropped box no corruption occurs, but if I pull the elevation viewpoint line back from the cropped area the corruption appears. [Why separate the two? - so that the billboards are all somewhat perpendicular to the elevation. If they are not separated, as one looks toward the edges of the elevation the billboards become thinner as they rotate and turn to face the central node].
3. There is no distance/depth of field in orthogonal views which does not help emphasise the building in the elevation (a suggestion for a future release?)
4. Like your suggestion about setting of transparency of trees (all vegetation is billboards). Will experiment. Thanks.
5. Modelled in ArchiCAD13 (64 bit) > 32bit Artlantis> 64bit Artlantis. (Problem occurs in both 32 and 64 bit Artlantis). PC is Windows7 on an i7 with 8GB Ram so hardware should be sufficient.

I don't think this will be fixed unless a bug fix is issued by Abvent

Hmmmm seems like similar problem as me. The billboard you are using, where did you get it? If you made it, is it possible i could have a copy of it? Cause these look like Australian trees and i tend to use Palm trees which look terrible, those billboards would be useful.

yes it appears a number of users are having problems
culprits seem to be the combination of cropped model and orthogonal view

as for the trees, they were a major find for us (good local foliage) - it is amazing the difference it makes. Unfortunately they are for sale - not free.
Belay that! They have a few freebies on their page but the rest cost (well worth it IMHO).

happy planting!

thanks robert. I'm likely to buy those, they arent too expensive and probably tax deductible. Finally some Australian plants! I really cant thank you enough for your find.

Just a question> what are you calling elevation line? Is that the blue bounding box lines maybe?
To do elevations you don't need it in fact... try to set the camera only by changing the distance between the red lines.

The elevation line = clipping box in the Help menu is used only for sections to cut out from the model.

Dear Ildiko,

Thanks for your comments - I'll try explain the problem - and yes I agree normally I would not use the cropping box for setting up elevations however

1.the model is a very large site, and we are doing large section/elevations through the site
2.All the vegetation has been done with billboards, all set to face camera (why? there are heaps of plants and heaps of views - I cannot do custom orientated ones for each view).
3.The billboards turn to face the red dot on the elevation handle, so that as we move out from the centre of the elevation the billboards become thinner as they rotate to the centre.
4. My solution to 3 was to crop the model and then move the elevation handle (& dot) far back so that the billboards are more perpendicular to the elevation - this worked
5. The problem is that cropped parts of the model seem to be corrupting the view.
6. Subsequent reading of other posts on the forum clearly shows there is some sort of corruption of the view when generating orthogonal views of a cropped project, when there are cropped objects (which should be invisible) between the 'viewer' and the part that is visible.

Artlantis should align the billboards to the elevation, why would they point toward the middle? Sounds like something should be done for the next upgrade.

Actually Mike all would be fine if the bug with cropped orthogonal views gets fixed....(please Abvent)

I have since read in the missing manual (admittedly for the earlier version) that in orthogonal views Artlantis still renders shadows for objects that have been cropped out! I really cannot see any reason why such a thing would be done. Hopefully Abvent are on to this - but given the problem occurred in version2 I cannot hold my breath,
