I am trying to render a 3min video at fairly high res for a client. My computer (dual intel g5) can only handle small chunks at once. It crashes often at 1 or so in the morning so I am left with a few hundred or so TGA files in a folder. How can I convert these to MOV format so I dont need to keep wasting time (like 12 hours for 2 seconds of video in some parts or 3 hours for 8 seconds in others) rerendering.

You can use quicktime to do that. I use the dutch version so I don't know the exact english command. I can tell you the shortcut keys to do this: Ctrl+shift+O. This allows you to choose the directory with your images and then an animation will be made of them.
I´m also having a problem with a failed movie file. I chose a too poor quality for the compression, and my clip is unusable. Where can i find the images of the animation?
I was asked about saving the images after rendering, and clicked yes, but can't find the them.
In Quicktime... (you need to buy the PRO version $29)... choose OPEN IMAGE SEQUENCE in the FILE menu... Navigate to the folder containing the images (they need to be named exactly the same except for the "serial number")...
It will put them all together and you can save this as a .mov.
I might recommend h.264 compression for max quality and compression... You'll find this under the EXPORT "Quicktime to Movie". Look under SETTINGS for compression options.
Don't know about resurrecting disappearing images... I'd simply do a FIND on my hard drive for the name of the image (or partial name) and see if it still exists...
my suggestion is to use the free software called 'virtual dub'. it will compile all your still images and convert into an animation.
works all the time for me.
