I have made a background the same size as the render, including the dpi.
But when i render, the background enlarges! Like it has almost zoomed into the background but I have no idea why, in the preview mode its all OK and the right size its just when i press render and i can see the preview that the enlarged background becomes apparent

No idea... I can't even figure out what is the real problem. What version are you using? If you still experience the same issue, just open a ticket in the Support Center.
Anyway, the size of the background doesn't have to match with the size of the final rendering at all. You can use any image file of any size and dpi.
