Hi
Can anyone help me create a 360 degree background image for use in VR objects? As described in the Artlantis Attitude page 29. I have a diffuse image and alpha map (recently bought from Ambient Light)but can't fathom out how to map them correctly to a cylinder. Is there a tutorial on this anywhere - I have searched high and low - hope someone can assist?
Thanks very much

Hi Lesley,
I don't know exactly what your problem is,
but maybe this can help you:
Make a cylinder like a wall with a certain radius (=R).
You can calculate the countour by 2xPIxR (PI=3,1428).
Now you can set your images to the right size and use them on the wall.
Example: wall radius 50mtr, height 50 mtr.
Contour: 314,28 mtr.
Size image ratio: 314,28:50
Does this help you or is the problem with something else?
Greetings and good luck.

Hi Jeroen
Thank you very much for your reply - I guess my question is more basic although scaling the image to the size of the cylinder is one issue. I really want to understand the steps involved to create one from scratch. Do I model the cylinder first (I use SketchUp) and then import it into artlantis? Then assuming I can get the scale correct use the shader to map the image to the cylinder? Or should I map the image first in SU and then import? I have two images - the diffuse and the alpha - do I have to create one image out of these with an alpha channel? If I add the two images to the cylinder I can't seem to get the alpha channel to work? I have the default shader set to max transparency and the alpha channel box checked. I've attached a screenshot to try and show what I mean. In this example I attached the image in SU which may not be the correct way to do it.
Appreciate any help anyone can give me or point me to a tutorial somewhere.
Thank you.
Lesley

Using 2 images over eachother so that they match is a very hard thing to do, next to impossible.
I think this is the best workaround:
Paste your background image using a photo editor in an image with a transparent background.
Do the same with the alphachannel image. Make a selection of the part you wish to use as alphachannel. Cut that part from your background layer. Remove the black&white alphachannel layer. Save your new background image as PSD or TGA.
Now you can use it on your cilinder. Check 'Use Alpha Channel' in the texture dialog and you will have a transparent sky in the background image. The Artlantis sky will be your sky.

Thanks for your help Sjaak – I have made a tiff file of the background image with an alpha channel which removes the sky successfully when mapped onto a transparent surface. I created a cylinder and made it an aof file. However when I try to place the image on the cylinder I can’t seem to get it to repeat or be sized correctly. I have set the dimensions of the cylinder and the image to be the same height (eg. 5m high with a 40m diameter) and ticked the box to tile horizontally and set the mapping to Y cylindric. I have the spacing between the maps set to 0. Yet the image gets stretched at each end of the image, seems to only repeat itself once with a big gap and the height dimension in particular is always too small and not to scale. I just can’t work out what I’m doing wrong?

Hi again - no orthogonal still doesn't help. I've tried different options and can't get it the right size or mapped around correctly at all. Hope you can help - have attached a aof file. Thank you for your time.
